Waipu Cove, Bream Bay, Northland, NEW ZEALAND

Our ancestors came from England, Ireland and Scotland
The first to arrive in New Zealand was Brian's great grandfather on his mother's side, William Joseph Healey, who arrived in 1845 with the 58th Regiment as a Colour Sergeant. He went over to Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia to marry his bride, Margaret Gallagher, in 1847. She had come as companion to Lady Wynyard, wife of the commanding officer, Colonel Wynyard. They both returned to duty in New Zealand where their family of nine children were all born.

Shirley's great grandparents Robert and Eliza Leaf and their family including 12 year old Alfred who became Shirley's grand father arrived on the Hanover in 1862 and settled in Auckland while having a government land grant in Matakohe where Alfred later settled.

Robert Leaf Snr

Brian's great great grandparents, John and Susanna Cullen, and his great grandparents William Mousley and Catherine Flower, with William's mother, Sarah, all came on the Tyburnia in 1863. They settled in Maungaturoto and established their families there.

Brian's other great grandparents on his mother's side, Charles and Elizabeth (nee Taylor) Davies were married in Birmingham. They came to New Zealand on the Jumna in 1864 and after trying their luck in Auckland with a business they moved to Maungaturoto and established the first boarding house there.

Charles and Elizabeth Davies

Shirley's great grandmother, Honora Meade was born in Ireland and travelled to Hobart, Tasmania, where she married Charles Mackie, an ex-convict turned policeman.

After Charles died Honora and her second husband Peter Johnson came to Auckland, New Zealand, bringing 2 of Honora's children with them, in 1869. Elizabeth, Honora's eldest, first married Alexander Brimner who died four years later, and then Alfred Leaf with whom she established the Leaf family at Matakohe.

Shirley's great grandparents, John and Matilda Neems, of Gloucestershire, had a son John who married his bride Loui Screen the day before embarking for New Zealand in 1893 on the Kaikoura together with Loui's sister and her husband.

John set a pattern of buying, renovating and selling farm properties and eventually the family settled at Hukatere near Matakohe on the Kaipara Harbour.

John and Matilda Neems
Shirley and Brian have been tracing their families and establishing both written and photographic records on the computer. Some lines have been traced back to the 16th century.

Those who have a desire to investigate local history can visit the historic Waipu Cemetery and the Waipu and Matakohe Museums.
